R.I.P. Gumby (and others)

Sad news in today's paper. The voice of Gumby, Pokey, Archie, Buzz Buzzard & Wally Walrus, Toughy, Bucky and Pepito, Courageous Cat and Minute Mouse, Professor Calculus, and Cincinnatus the storekeeper, has passed away. Dallas ("Dal") R. McKennon had been living in Raymond the past few years to be closer to his family. More here.

Voice talent is a really strange (and sometimes unfair) business. What makes us listen and what turns us away? What will keep a young child watching a program, while at the same time not drive away older children and their parents? Not a strict science, but when I think of Gumby's voice I do not conjure up ideas of a "threat" or a "freak." I think "Gumby." Funny, that.

May the voice of this artist live forever, if only to collect royalties and such.
